Simon,
Now I understand. The diode is acting as the cutout to prevent discharge of the battery back through the dynamo, diodes being a one way gate for current flow. Do you happen to know what the resistance is of the resistor is?
Thanks
Steven

I seem to remember is was around 0.5 to 1 ohm but a high power rating of at least 20w. The originals was a wire resistor wound around a ceramic but I didn't have an original so just kept playing with resistors until I got to an acceptable 1A charge showing on the ammeter on a fully charged battery.

Simon,
Thanks. That confirms what I figured out yesterday. I measured a 6V 18W/18W headlamp bulb's resistance at 1.5 ohms per filament. So half of that would be 0.75 ohms.
