alloy rear mudguards (again....)

I recently fitted a new stainless steel front mudguard to my Rapide. I wanted to have the guard closer to the tyre so I needed to reduce the mudguard radius. The advice in the Mudguards.pdf works well but I found spreading the sides very difficult as stainless is stronger and much stiffer than aluminium.
I eventually used a piece of wood a little wider than the internal mudguard width and maybe an inch or so thick. I put the guard on its back on a piece of old carpet and put the piece of wood in at a bit of an angle then twisted it square to the sides. Starting at one end I knocked the wood along the inside of the guard to the other end. I did this a few times and checked the radius after each pass. This didn't put any marks in the guard.
Depending on how much you need to adjust the radius you might put a slow taper on the width of the wood so that you could knock it deeper into the guard for each pass.
