The standard size is 1/4". Where it is possible, I recommend the use of 7mm diameter with my needle roller conversions as this is a nicer slide fit in most gearbox mainshafts. Some people do not realise that there is a bush in the clutch end of the earlier mainshafts with a 1/4" hole through it. This was not fitted to later bikes so I alway suggest to people that if the bush is there to knock it out from the kick start end and use the 7mm rod. There are a few mainshafts which will not take the 7 mm rods and for these I supply 1/4" items.
I have seen two clutches where my mod seemed not to have cured the problem of the outer plate not lifting squarely as seen by kicking the bike over with the clutch lifted and hence free. In both cases the inner plate was badly out of true and either warped or the back and front faces were not parallel. The needle roller mod will not cure that problem.
