Trigger pulled

Hello all.

Well, i have 'pulled the trigger' and shaken hands on a Comet. It belongs to a club member and the bike is known to the club. I just have to clear a space now in the garage, and collect the bike. The bike currently lives 3 miles away from me so collecting will not be an issue.

I am currently looking to get the bike at the end of this month, and will need to do some maintenance on the machine before riding, so am looking for some tips from Comet enthusiasts;

Best practice/how to change oil and filter
Any other re-commisioning tips welcome

The bike has not really been used in the last few years, so i want to take it steady and get it right! Current owner is going to help me of course, very nice chap, but the more info i can collect the better for me.

Thanks in anticipation.

Best regards,

Steve.

Dear Steve,
You will get lots advice varying from doing a complete strip down to just put petrol in and kick it up. Somewhere in between might be best.
Ask the previous owner when it was last run and what work was done in the recent past. Unless there was anything obviously wrong I would do an oil change, check that tyres and brakes worked and if it runs do a tentative start and run around the yard. You can then assess what might need doing.
Ask yourself what you expect from the bike and is it going to be a rider or a poser. If it is going to be a rider don't leave it too long as life is too short to be missing out on the good things.
