RH Insurance BE CAREFUL!

Morning All
At the last Mid Glos VOC meeting, Peter Barker raised a question regarding insurance cover provided by RH Classic / Equity Red Star in respect of the machine being garaged while at your home address. My renewal has just come through with the same endorsement on that Peter was querying.
It is normal for insurers to ask where you keep your machine during the hours of 10pm until 6am when you are at your home address and if you say in a locked garage, then this gives a premium reduction and forms part of the policy ie if it is stolen from your drive at midnight then they would not pay, however, if it was stolen from your locked garage at midnight as per your declaration, then they would pay. I am sure we are all familiar with this situation.
BE WARNED! As per Peter’s original query, RH Classic / Equity Red Star have extended their clause to anytime 24/7 at your home address. I have called them to clarify if it is correct and they confirmed without hesitation that it was. They stated “if you returned from a ride on your motorcycle and parked it on the drive or road by your house at anytime of the day, then went inside your house to take off your riding gear and allow the bike to cool down for 5 minutes, if the bike was stolen there would be no theft cover in place. You would need to ride your bike straight into the garage and lock the door to retain cover” they also confirmed that if you were tinkering with your bike on the drive and you went to get some tools, again, if it was stolen then there would be no theft cover.
This obviously only applies to your home address if you declared that the bike would be stored in a locked garage whilst at your home address.
I for one will not be renewing my policy with them due to this unrealistic endorsement and have looked at several other providers this morning. Interestingly, Hagerty Classic have provided a better quote for a multi bike policy, albeit with a bigger excess and they do stipulate the standard 10pm to 6am restriction.
So thanks to Peter for raising the issue, worryingly, the endorsement has been on my policy for 2 years and I hadn’t noticed the slight change they had made!

You do need to read the small print ... like the time I read that only 50% of the agreed value would be paid if the machine did not have a current MOT and I had been 3 years following the insurers suggestion in that they had said to put include my racing bikes on the comprehensive policy with my road bikes!

I'm insured with RH, and I'm pretty sure that's been on the policy for a number of years.

It does appear to have been on there for some time, however, all I am saying is be careful as it is a very restrictive endorsement that could catch people out

Does this demand for a current MOT apply to pre-1960 machines which are not longer obliged to have one for road use?

I changed my insurer after I read that. I guess that little trick is a step to far nowadays even for the 'difficult fringe's' of the insurance industry but as I said just take some time to read the small print including the yearly 'updates and improvements'

Graham or anybody else current using RH.
Does the RH garage clause include a distance from your house where the clause is active? I have heard its 500m. I.e what would happen if you stopped at the fuel station round the corner from where you live and your bike was stolen whilst there. Would RH walk away?

I don't use RH but my insurance is coming up for renewal soon so they was on my list to get quotes from.

The RH clause as from my insurance in the U.K. It also states a valid MOT is required. My bikes are in storage (not Vins) and exempt so I assume they are ok as they are also not taxed.... If they we parked on the street technically they would be covered but I think that would be impossible to argue. Now if they were stolen out of your unlocked garage as you were making a cuppa then I guess you would have to be creative.

0973 - Garaging clause

You have agreed that you will keep your vehicle in a locked garage or building, either at your home address or at theaddress declared to us when the vehicle is not being used. If a theft or attempted theft happens at your home addressor the garaging address, when the vehicle is not in a locked garage or building agreed to by the underwriters, we will notpay any claim you make for that theft or attempted theft.

They are now on my list not to get quotes from. :(
I would have to agree with you Eddy.
What other insurance company's are members using? I'm currently with Peter James who still only enforce their garage clause between 10pm and 6am but their premiums have crept up over the last few years.
