I had to strip a complete bike to the bare crank that had been a total restoration/rebuild due to very poor workmanship ..........Anyone like to know who did that job.............Very well known person in the UK.
I would but maybe not on an open forum ?.

Like buying a vintage bike under going restoration that is 90% complete, the other 10% is usually unobtainable..I'm doing a Comet that was converted to swinging arm and the owner wants it back to standard the only part missing was the battery tray, not obtainable, luckily found a damaged one that was reclaimed an all is now moving forward..

Jeez! , almost sorry I asked. Engine fully rebuilt by Maughans. Needs a rewire (imho) ,oil lines sorted and a commission. No paint, no chrome, no tyres, no surprises. Cash if needs be but would like a provenance note. Too old (arthritis set in last year) and busy to clear last fence. Just thought un jambe electrique might let me have a few more years bt will try without if too much trouble...
Sorry I bothered you...

Don’t be sorry and don’t be put off either. Lots of good feedback and advice available here. What part of the country are you in? Definitely go for the electric start kit from our French friend you won’t regret it! Doesn’t sound like your job is too big.

I need someone to fnish a 90 percent restored rap and fit an electric start. Who can I trust not to rip me off and do a good job?
Hi,
Just a suggestion, you could contact Ferrets Electrickery. This guy has featured in classic bike magazines and rewires the bike at your home. If you fit an electric start, someone on here should be able to give you a schematic. His website is currently being revised but there is a contact number if you google the above. I haven't used him and I think it's quite expensive but it would at least solve one issue.

I know from experience that you must adhere to a strict procedure for starting a bike fitted with these starters especially one with coil ignition just one backfire transmitted to the sprag clutch and your shear pin is gone. in one instance I lost 4 teeth from the periferry of the biggest gear in the starter.
Don't get me wrong it's a great design I would (will) buy another but it needs to be treated with care it's not a starter designed with the engine as a whole like a modern bike and needs to be treated with respect.

Don't be sorry, apologies, if you think any comments were inappropriate but you did get a lot of hopefully constructive information before you clarified the situation with your machine. One point that may be of use is that if you go ahead with the electric starter I believe two things are necessary for their longevity and performance. One , an ignition system which will prevent kickback at low rpm and two the biggest high output battery you can possibly fit along with suitably sized cables. My road Egli (1150cc and in a state of tune about as high as practicable for road use) was marginal with a good quality 12 AH battery , the bike has NO kickstart facility as I cannot risk further injury to my knees. The bike has a Bob Dunn system driving directly to the mainshaft and works perfectly now I run a 17 AH sealed Red Top high output battery. It is possible that newer Lithium batteries will work successfully but are likely to be very expensive to get the level of reserve power I enjoy. Assume you intend to use some form of high output 12 generator ?.
