Do you think this was because the lip on the spindle was pushing down on the bevel gear, or the gear meshing too high in relation to the horizontal bevel (driving) gear. I have had to linish a bit off the spindles from time to time............I remember on one of the 5 speed boxes one of the three selector forks actually passes under that spindle, and they can jam because of that. Yes I think that was the case - I did note some indication of the shoulder of the spindle interfering with the bevel gear.
