E: Engine Petrol?

Have read a couple of threads, stating that 98 octane should be used. Why? Always had run my Comet (7.3 piston) on 98. Had to refill it in middle of nowhere where only 95 was available. No problem. Checked riders handbook, says 75 Octane. Since filling stations selling 98 are becoming scarse in my country, do I really need high octane fuel?
Second thought, in my country they something called E85 containing 85% ethanol and stated to be 98 octane (much cheaper). It is now legal to use in classic racing. I think it will make an aircooled engine run colder. Of course it needs rejetting and adjusted ignition advance. As the ill-effects of ethanol are discussed in depth in other threads, I think that is well known.
