Jampot, The Official Journal of the AJS and Matchless Owners Club has been running a series of articles on Hugh Anderson. The article in the latest issue has a photograph of Hugh winning a round of the National Battle of the Twins championship on an Egli Vincent at the famed Wanganui Cemetery circuit in 1986. Hugh won the series.
At the end of the article there is a recent photograph of Hugh sitting on what looks like a very nice Rapide in touring trim. He has owned the bike since 1972 and done 30,000 miles on it.
Maybe some of our New Zealand members can tell us more.

I was talking to Hugh last year when he purchased a copy of the works records document for his Rapide. Hugh is not a VOC member but will probably be known to the NZ section.
Interesting Rapide his as it was supplied new with a 150MPH speedo, std 20" front & 19" rear wheels, but touring mudguards. So not all those Rapides with shadow speedos are wrong.

Hugh is also a twice winner of the IOM TT.

Hugh was a regular competitor at crmc meetings. Always approachable, one of the good guys. I remember when asked how do you know which gear you are in on the 16(or was it 18) speed suzuki, "just keep shifting and hope there's some left".

Will see if I can dig out a couple if pics of Hugh when he did a few laps on Ian Hamilton's Egli at a VOC high speed trial. Very nice to speak to and a "classic" rider. He was smooth to the point of looking slow but his lap times on a strange machine were a couple of seconds faster than the rest circuiting at the time.

Just realised having had a closer look that the bike is the machine owned by Roy Anderson which Ian raced on and off from the early 70s, still on 4LS front wheel. Not long later the front end was changed to 38mm Marzocchi forks and twin discs, same bike that went to Daytona in 1988.

Hugh Anderson won the Battle of the Twins series against young riders on modern bikes. He was mounted on Ken McIntosh's Egli Rapide. Well, sort of Egli - he made the frame himself circa 1972. It originally had a large 4ls front drum brake, but for the BoT series, got a new Italian fork and discs. The engine is the one made after mine... but a bit hotter, I suspect.
This bike was one of several stolen when there was a big raid on Ken McIntosh's workshop not long after the BoT win. He paid a ransom for the Rapide engine, and made a new rolling chassis for it.
