Sat-Navs Garmin Quest2

I've just received a new Quest2 (out of warranty) for about 1/4 the price. I suspect the problem (it started to freeze at shorter and shorter intervals) is that there isn't enough processing power and there's too much data. Whatever, I'm not the only one to have problems with a quest2, and not the only one to have garmin replace the device. At the Franco/Belgian Rally was one such, who remarked that the new one was OK, but had an american accent, and pronounced "route" as rowt instead of root. As it should be.....
What that man needs to do is via MENU, go to System setup, and change the language to British English. Then, I think, he'll get posh Gertie back again.
The anonimity isn't because i think he's on a witness protection scheme, but because I've forgotten his name.......

Mine was doing the same then tried to set fire to the mount. It to was replaced by garmin and when it started doing it again it went in the bin.
John Appletons was doing the same on our trip to Italy so it spent the rest of the trip in the tank bag. Not happy with this it then jumped ship never to be seen again:D

We now both use the Garmin Zumo as it is the dogs brown things :p

Gps.

But Graham, you only go as far as the end of the drive :D

Let's get this thread going. What GPS do you use, how good is it, does it do everything that you want it to do and if not what more do you want from it.

To start things off I have just bought a Garmin Zumo, a nice bit of kit but the one thing that I miss is that it does not show the time on the main display.

This has got to beat talking about an over priced PR15 that has just sold on ebay :D

More on GPS

It seems that at every rally lately there are huddles of people standing around ignoring the bikes and comparing their gps sets.. Well here goes.

Quest - If it locks up you can force it to do a reboot by holding two buttons, I forget which two but see the web site. Personally I think that next time it plays up you should boot it over the nearest hedge.

Tom Tom- I bought a Tom Tom rider1 when they first came out just over ayear ago. It cost an arm and a leg but was the only dedicated motorcycle sat nav around. Within a month it failed and went back to Tom-Tom for repair. After they had had it for 6 weeks I got 'Very Excited' with customer service and they sent me a new one.
The rider 1 works well but the mounting bracket is rubbish, the power pins erode the contacts on the back of the unit after only 1000 miles and it fails to charge properly (it does this on Jap bikes as well). The last time it did this was on the way to the French rally when it worked fine all the way to Dover ( I knew the way anyway) but packed up as we left the ferry in Callais- Bugger. Tom-Tom now say that the rider 2 is improved and I should throw my 1 year old system away and buy the replacement from them... Ha!

Garmin Zumo - I have just bought one of these and 'though I try not to agree with the member from the Welsh section of the Honda owners club:D he is quite right they are brilliant.

What do you use

I've used TomTom in the past, never again!

I'm currently using an older Garmin (2610) which works great (now I've sorted out the ignition interferance) It's waterproof, easy to hear, and easy to use on the move. As my esteemed coleague in Wales has stated the new Zumo is the dog's dangly bits.

The problem with the TT rider (now corrected with the rider2) was that you could not easily transfer it between car and bike, wheras Garmin thought about this from day 1.

TomTom Rider

I've got a TomTom Rider (V1 I think) and it's a doddle to transfer between car and bike.

It's got a bracket that goes in the car - although I must confess, I don't actually look at the screen much, I just follow the voice instructions. Hence, sometimes, I don't even bother with the bracket, I just put the TomTom on the passenger seat and it still finds a signal without any bother.

TomTom rider 1

Graham,
The problem with the rider 1 was that it only had the facility for bluetooth audio, so you needed a b/tooth headset for the bike, and 1 for the car.

The Zumo has the option of either b/tooth or hard wired headset.
The new rider 2 does support multi output audio.

But as allways each to their own...:D

Aaah, but we've got a bluetooth carphone kit, so the carphone kit just sees the TomTom as another bluetooth device.

All you need to do is 'pair' the TomTom Rider and the carphone kit together, then every time the TomTom needs to speak directions, it just connects to the carphone kit and Bob's your uncle, Charlie's your aunt! Once it's finished speaking, it drops the connection, so you can still receive calls from your mobile!

Mind you, as Russell says, I only ever go to the top of the drive with it!

GPS and matters arising

The convention on jtan is that even if you have an odd email address (as i do: my name wasn't as rare as i thought) then you put your actual name at the bottom of the email. Then everyone knows, or will learn, who they are conversing with. Friendships have been made that way. Easier still is to use your name as your handle. Or maybe I'm confusing my handle with my atavar, apparently an imaginary person that I would prefer to be (half Clint Eastwood, half Mike Hailwood, works ride with Ducati and having an affair with Penelope Cruz? Twist my arm.....).
I bring this up because when I made the remark about the unknown quest2 owner being on a witness protection scheme, I WAS JOKING. I didn't expect that everyone who subsequently responded would also be hiding behind an alias.

Russell is specifically cleared of this charge. If he is on a witness protection program, I respectfully (sic) submit that Vinparts isn't much of an alias. Even the Taffia might figure that one out......
