Hi Alan
The DVLA is a nightmare of bureaucracy whatever size bike, car, etc you have!. However I have an awful feeling that the French "Crit Air zone information" will raise bureaucracy and chaos to a whole new level. To travel through France now it would SEEM that you needto check EACH DAY on your Smartphone or I Pad ( neither of which I posses) whether you can enter this or that zone whether you have or have not got the right Vignette etc as access to the various zones will depend on a number of variables, which can change daily. I quote one phrase in all the guff "Old vehicles of all kinds cannot obtain the Vignette and have no permission to drive during the day......." The series of dots are theirs, so goodness knows what is next. Do any of our French members understand all the implications of this and have they had problems planning a route. This looks as though it is going to be a real problem particularly for the foreigner who only travels a couple of weeks a year, and of course will be impossible for someone without a Smarphone, I Pad etc. M-rde!

My brother researched this a little as he has to travel back through France from Spain. He said that the rules may not apply after a certain hour (e.g. 8 pm to... ?) and weekends. Don't take this as gospel as I haven't, as yet, found this written anywhere.

You forgot to mention that from next July the speed limit on open roads will be down to 80 km/h (50 mph) from 90 km/h.
You know the national sport here in France is disobedience. So some unpopular laws are simply ignored by many.
The French cultivate this since the revolution in 1789, some years later we persuaded our King that he no longer needs his head!
To perpetuate this tradition, I ride with no daylights, illegal helmet and gloves, no silencer, etc and I've still got the occasional thumbs up from the gendarmes.
But I don't guaranty it will work like this every time!:)

And I'll add that if you choose the right roads you will probably travel the entire country without seeing any from the law...
