I'm doing up a D but with a red Ducati, red Corvette, red Triumph and a black Yamaha, I tried to balance the books by going with Black:). I think you should paint it the colour you will be happy with. I had mine painted at Cleveland Bike Spray who did a great job. I stripped the bike right down to its individual bits and it's surprising how many there are to paint and how fiddly it is.
Picking up what little chrome there is from Ashington on Mon.

Like red wine there are health benefits: red vincents dilate the blood vessels, particularly of people who prefer black. However if Post Office Red does it for you, so be it. Beware: it's a slippery slope: next it'll be Vincents in DHL orange........

DHL is yellow here. eewwww!

Hi again,

I replied above pointing you in the direction of a website where a Vincent owner in the States had re-painted his bike in its original red color. http://www.patwilliamsracing.com/vincent/ I emailed him on your behalf and here is his response. You can respond to him via the email address on his website.

I will leave you to follow up with him, he certainly looks like he could help you with the task and sounds like a great guy.

All the best: Rapide.

Howdy James,

Thank you sir. Sure you're familiar with the history of the reds used by Vin. They were done in two batches - one of which included PEV's Bristol automobile on his wife's request - and it is very hard to find this color in its correct tint as almost any exposure to sunlight had a tendency to fade it to pink or a pastel type red. Being from Ohio (up North) and immediately oversprayed with black at time of original sale, my machine had all of its original paint preserved in reasonably good condition all things conidering. The black machines were dipped and the paint thicker and less porous whereas the red machines were sprayed using no primers on critical pices (UFM,RFM) requiring clearanced component fitment and thus prone to runs and tremendous variation in film thickness.

The best ubleached...albeit greasey... original paint was on the backs of the brake plates of which I used one of the fronts to get a match which I had mixed up in BASF/Glassurit. If you like I can get the paint code and email it to you. This paint color is almost exactly the same as Porsche Guards Red used for years on 911's.

Would love to get some pics of this project in progress/completion as my site has been far more popular than I envisioned and I plan to start including pictures of other's machines and projects.

Cheerio,
Peter

...well Howdy Chaps,

Figured since I'd never got around to registering for the VOC over the years the rarified atmosphere of this chat room was off limits. Anywho, as a text book case for "one is never satisfied" I'm seeking a very crusty Black Shadow to mechanically restore but leave in all its crusty patenaed glory to go along with .......my very RED Chinese Red Touring Rapide mentioned in various posts here. A pic of it forth with as well as a pic of a red touring shadow y'all have probably seen before as reference.

Putting on my painting cap for a moment, I can say in the aftermath (in reference to the challenge not disasterous results, it's been totally rewarding) of this restoration that if you're faced with the daunting task of painting 60 plus pieces run-free one at a time might as well have them visually jump right out at you when finished and in red, one of these machines is lovely to behold in any light - absolutely setting off Vincent's mechanical complexity superbly.

.....now to find it a crusty brother.
