There are wholesale changes coming to the way historic vehicles (of ALL types) are imported into Australia, with the regime under the Australian Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 about to be replaced by the Road Vehicle Standards Bill 2018 and associated Bills and Rules.

The bill is Part of a package of five bills to regulate the importation and provision of road vehicles, the bill replaces the Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 by: enabling the minister to determine national road vehicle standards for road vehicles and road vehicle components; prohibiting the importation into Australia of road vehicles that do not comply with current national road vehicle standards, establishing a Register of Approved Vehicles, establishing a framework for the recall of road vehicles and approved road vehicle components; providing for criminal offences, civil penalties, injunctions, enforceable undertakings and infringement notices.

The greatest change that affects Classic and Vintage vehicles will be to obtaining an import permit – at present, pre 1989 vehicles can be imported as of right. Under the existing legislation the Minister MUST grant a VIA (Vehicle Import Approval). The new scheme will see the Minster having discretion to refuse the importation of any vehicle, and insist on an inspection of the vehicle anywhere in the world at the importer’s expense.

At present, historic vehicles are often taken overseas for events without using a carnet, and then reimported inti Australia by obtaining a VIA which is granted automatically. The new laws will enable to Minister to e refuse re-importation, leaving vehicles stranded overseas with no appeal process – never to be imported into Australia. There are also concerns that the importation of low volume and bespoke components for our classic and vintage vehicles may also be adversely impacted under the proposed changes.

All of this is in addition to the work of the Asbestos Police, that has all but halted the importation of historic vehicles and their parts into Australia. These Asbestos enforcers have ensured there will never be another Bugatti event in Australia.

World wide the nudge nudge* politics is having an effect everyone who is a petrol head is a deviant. By hook or by crook H&S safety and any other regulation ,gov is after us
Push Bikes rule the media roost when did you last see a car advert that mentioned performance /mechanics rather than the in car entertainment or the drivers so called 'image'
When was there a last good motor cycle advert (You meet the nicest people on a Honda) Barry Sheene was the last personality to be really allowed in the mainstream media fold.
All petrol heads need to get up and make a noise ( a political noise I mean) latest drive by limit at our local track is 85Db!:( another symptom of the general publics attitude being manipulated any big team football ground exceeds 110 Db any weekend.
Rant is not over

I must say Martyn I am amazed at the lack of interest in your post is nobody in AU ever coming over to an international rally with their bikes again or going to NZ or Bonneville with lack of complaint this regulation will sail through
Everywhere the doors are closing in Greece I understand the results of the EU roadworthyness regs are that old bikes will only be used to ride to a specified event theres no doubt about it we are worse offenders than drug dealers

Tim, I am now able to borrow bikes when attending O/S rallies but I know someone is in the process of sending his Vincent to the UK, hopefully to be returned. I would like to read the details of this review. Just like when you send a part o/s for repairs the border police are notified it will be returning. I have done this a few times. A totally different kettle of fish with a Black Shadow.
We are small fry compared to the Bentley, Bugatti, Alfa etc clubs. The International Bentley Rally in Oz in 2005 brought in over $20M worth of vehicles; imagine the diplomatic meltdown if they were not allowed to return home?!?!?!?! No, I think the Classic Car lobby will be onto this like a fly on a piece of shit. An acquaintance shipped a 1933 Riley to the classic Le Mans a few years ago; if he had been refused re-entry of the car I dare say parliament would know about it. Let's just sit back and let all the lobby groups deal with it for the time being. After all, the asbestos police let my bike in untouched!!!!!!

Al (and others)

There is a link to the Australian government site that contains full details of the proposed new laws in my original post. Read them. I think I have actually understated the potential impact!

This is just the beginning of a ground swell on this topic. As to your recent experience - whats with this "I'm all right Jack"?

Regarding Alyn's case............They seem to pick more on the "dealers"than privateers who only ship the odd machine here or there.
