Hi.Has anybody had experience of using an alertnative to the Burman clutch on a Burman box.The basket of mine spread during the Parade(thrash the thing to death;))lap.I can repair mine and 'band' it like some Ajs/Matchless types, but your experiences will help guide my decision...John

I have the Conways (Honda based) clutch conversion in my Comet. It has a cush drive system in the back, bolts straight on, and works well. Recommended.

looks like I might have to bite the bullet and pay for a clutch(phoned colin jenner:eek:)
Also checked on the availability of Burman clutch baskets and they are available from the spares co. Although if I go that route I will have to replace the friction plates, apparently they have indents not tabs, the new baskets are solid not slotted.

Comet Clutches

There are two designs of Burman Clutch. That fitted to some AJS/Matchless bikes is much better than the normal Comet one where the drum is not slotted and the friction plates do not have protruding ears. Instead there are little rails spot welded(?) inside the drum which engage with notches on the perphiry of the friction plates-a complete reversal of the usual Comet set up. Maybe enquiries with AMC specialists will help.

Bite the bullet ,I worked with my burman clutch for a few years and spent a long time on it , the conways clutch has been in now for 5 years and have never looked at it.
good luck

Comet clutch

The later pattern clutch is available via the Spares Co. This has a band around it, and the ears are the opposite to the earlier pattern, And it costs.I say this cos I bought one. Ken
